NSCDS Basketball Results for February 4 - 9

Raider Boys' Basketball

Last Tuesday, the North Shore boys' varsity basketball team traveled to Morgan Park, where senior Jamie Swimmer led all scores with 16 points. North Shore won, with a final score of 75 to 62.  

Friday was Senior Night at North Shore.  Every player received some court time as the boys downed a depleted Elgin Academy by a margin of 60 points. Sophomore Sam Kayser paced the Raiders with a season high of 14 points. 

On Saturday, the boys traveled to Macon County to battle Meridian High School in the third annual Illini Central Coaches vs. Cancer Showcase.  While Meridian player Dylan Smith was attacking the Raiders inside, Austin Curren and Jamie Swimmer lit it up from the outside, scoring 20 of the Raiders' first half points from the perimeter. With the fouls racking up, the Raiders turned to senior Sam Tullman to cool Smith inside.

"Tullman battled Smith on several key plays in the first quarter, second quarter, and third period, until Smith exited the game for good with his team down 11 points," said North Shore coach Rashid Smith. "The Raiders then extended the lead to 15 plus and eventually won the contest 64-55."  

Riley Hall took home Player of the Game accolades, finishing with 16 points and 18 rebounds.

Raider Girls' Basketball

Tuesday, February 5 vs. Chicagoland Jewish High School 

North Shore, 33. Chicagoland Jewish HS, 30.

Individual Scoring: Redzovic 12, Vohra 8, Kroll 8, Nolan 2, Robinson 2 + 15 rebounds, Slotkin 1 + 10 rebounds.

Last-second victory: North Shore moved the ball better than in previous games, but poor shooting near the basket along with 33 turnovers kept the game close throughout. The Raiders trailed by 3 points with 1:17 left. Sophomore Kayla Robinson put back an offensive rebound with 5 seconds left, which gave North Shore a 31-30 lead. Sophomore Annie Kroll hit 2 free throws with 2.5 seconds left after the defense forced a turnover, which gave North Shore a victory over the host school in the first round of the Chicagoland Jewish High School Class 1A Regional in Deerfield.

Robinson's basket was the first of her career and came on her seventh offensive rebound of the game. The Raiders grabbed 23 offensive rebounds during the game and outrebounded their opponents at both ends, 64-32.

Thursday, February 7 vs. Ida Crown Jewish Academy

North Shore, 42. Ida Crown, 40.

Individual Scoring: Annie Kroll 19, Safia Vohra 6, Meghan Nolan 6, Kayla Robinson 5, Ilhana Redzovic 3, Claire McCarthy 2, Rachel Gordon 1. 

North Shore's girls' basketball team bested Ida Crown 42-40 Thursday night to win the Chicagoland Jewish High School Regional and advance to the Westminster Christian Regional in Elgin on Tuesday.

The Raiders' win avenges losses to Ida Crown in both last year's regional championship and in a non-league game last month weeks ago when turnover and rebound problems led to a 34-17 loss.

The Raiders outrebounded Ida Crown 41-30 (for a 105-63 2-game regional rebounding margin), minimized Ida Crown's height advantage defensively and rode Annie Kroll's hot second-half shooting that included 5 of 5 3-pointers on her way to a game high of 19 points. Equally important to their regional championship surge was the Raiders' ability to improve their shooting percentage, limit turnovers, and make key free throws in the 4th quarter of both games.

Saturday, February 9

The ISL coaches selected sophomore guard Annie Kroll as 2nd Team All-Conference, which designates her as one of the top 12 players in the league. Junior forward Becca Slotkin (North Shore's leading rebounder) was selected as Honorable Mention All-Conference.

North Shore Country Day School, established in 1919, is a college-preparatory school of 500 students in grades junior kindergarten through 12th grade, located at 310 Green Bay Road in Winnetka.
