How to Protest Your New Trier Township Property Taxes

This is the year to file an appeal on your property taxes. You don't need an attorney to do this - it's very easy.

How to Protest Your New Trier Township Property Taxes

Winnetka, Wilmette, Kenilworth, Glencoe

YEA for those of us living in North Cook County - 2013 is the tri-annual property tax reassessment for our area.  For property taxing purposes, Cook County is divided into three segments:  North, South, and Chicago.  We are in the North segment (which is Cook County north of North Avenue in Chicago.)

New Trier Township is within the North segment and consists of 56,000   residents living in Winnetka, Wilmette, Kenilworth, Glencoe, and parts of east Glenview and east Northfield.

You do not need to hire an attorney to protest your property taxes.  Let me repeat that:  you do not need to hire an attorney to do this for you.  In fact, the assessor's office will tell you that results are about the same whether you pay an attorney or do it yourself.

At the beginning of May you will receive your tax bill and you will have 30 days to appeal.  While you can file an appeal every year, they recommend that you file an appeal during a reassessment year - and this is our year.  I have written before about how complicated, unwieldly, unfair, and crazy our property taxes are.  But this doesn't mean filing an appeal is difficult.

In fact, appealing on your own is wildly easy.  The forms can be found online at:www.cookcountyassessor.com.  Click on the tab at the top that says "Appeals" then click on "File a residential appeal."  You cannot do this before you receive your tax bill because New Trier Township is not open yet to receive appeals until May.

You can also stop by the New Trier Township Office at 739 Elm St in Winnetka and they will help you.  They will find comps for you and get all the necessary paperwork in order for your appeal to be filed.  They will even send it out for you.  They do this for FREE.

If you live in the New Trier Township villages of Winnetka, Wilmette, Kenilworth, Glencoe, east Northfield and East Glenview, remember that 2013 is your assessment year for your property taxes.  It is the best time to file an appeal and you will be able to do so this May.
