At the Library: Open House for Families with Children with Special Needs

There's something for everyone and everyone is welcome at the library. Families with special-needs children are invited to a low-key, before-hours tour on Sunday, January 29, 12:00 noon - 1:00 p.m.

Are you unsure how your child will respond to the library? Wondering what resources might be available to your family? Visit the Glencoe Public Library on Sunday, January 29, 12:00 noon-1:00 p.m. and take a low-key tour with other families with children with special needs. This is a unique opportunity for families to come to the library one hour before our official opening time to learn more about what we offer to all children in Glencoe.

This event is one of several interesting children's programs offered recently. On January 16, the library and Family Services of Glencoe worked together to bring master mask maker Jeff Semmerling to the library for a mask-making workshop that was hugely popular. And on January 22, the library screened and discussed Inside Hana's Suitcase, a riveting docu-drama that started with the discovery--by a Tokyo researcher--of a suitcase received from Auschwitz with the name Hana Brady painted on it. She followed the historical trail to reveal the poignant story of two young children who grew up in pre-WWII Czechoslovakia and the terrible events they endured because they were born Jewish. Based on the internationally acclaimed book Hana's Suitcase, which has been translated into 40 languages, the film is an effective blend of documentary and dramatic techniques. Those who missed the January 22 event may check out the book, play, DVD, and/or audiobook to  experience Hana's story for themselves.
