Through a Glass Darkly (Film Series)

"Spirituality on Film" presented by Reid Schultz of Columbia College

Directed by Ingmar Bergman, Sweden, 1961, 90 min.

The Oscar winner for Best Foreign Film of 1961, this film begins Bergman's trilogy of films dedicated to wrestling with God and faith. Set on a secluded island off the coast of Sweden, the story centers on Karin, just released from a mental hospital, who must now face the realities inherent in the nature of her illness. We observe the effects of her situation on the three people closest to her: her husband, her father, and her brother. The film is one of Bergman's finest works, an intricate exploration of the fragility of the human psyche and the complexities of life. In Swedish with English subtitles.
