The Story of America: Essays on Origins

Jill Lepore, Harvard professor and regular contributor to the New Yorker, is one of the most prolific and most brilliant of modern essayists. Jim Kenney of Common Ground will explore her latest collection, The Story of America, which combines 20 pieces on topics ranging from King Philips's War to the abuse of the Constitution in contemporary politics, and from Cotton Mather by way of Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Paine, and Noah Webster to Chang Apana, the Hawaiian-Chinese detective who provided the model for Hollywood's Charlie Chan. It is a fascinating account of the way the American narrative developed ... and how it gradually shaped the many versions of the American story.
