Off Campus Writers' Workshop Presents: Carol LaChapelle - "Writing and Marketing the Short Form Personal Essay"

Carol LaChapelle - "Writing and Marketing the Short Form Personal Essay"
The personal essay thrives today because of its versatility of both subject and form. It can be funny, serious, scolding, or meditative, and take the shape of a memoir or character sketch; book review or commentary; blog post or travel essay. In this workshop, Carol will review the elements of the short-form personal essay (500-800 words); discuss a recently published sample; read and critique five essay drafts; and explore the ever-shifting personal essay market, both print and online.
Carol is a Chicago-based writer, teacher, and author of Finding Your Voice, Telling Your Stories (Marion Street Press, 2008). For the past 25 years, she has taught writing and journal writing workshops for adults in a variety of venues, including the Newberry Library, the Off Campus Writers Workshop, the Cathedral Counseling Center, and Northwestern University. Carol will accept for the workshop the first five members' drafts sent to her by Monday, Nov. 11, 5 pm. Drafts should be double-spaced and not exceed 800 words. Writers should copy their drafts to distribute in the workshop (at least 25 copies).
OCWW meets Thursdays, 9:30 - Noon, at the Winnetka Community House, 620 Lincoln Ave., Winnetka, from September to May each year.
