Michelangelo and His Colossal Creation: The Sistine Ceiling (NSSC Class)
The story of the Sistine ceiling is fraught with dramatic clashes between Michelangelo and Pope Julius II. A herculean effort, over 5,000 square feet and 70 feet above the floor, with 300 figures depicting the creation, the fall, and the flood. Recent conservation surprisingly revealed Michelangelo as a supreme colorist. When this work was completed, Asconio Condivi declared "Michelangelo is above the reach of envy." The ceiling and Last Judgment completed years later are transcendent treasures of Western civilization. Hear the amazing story of their creation. Claire Cross of the University of Chicago leads the class on Friday, April 4, from 1 until 2:30 p.m.
