Day-to-day functional movements are highly dependent on the core, or what Joseph Pilates called the “powerhouse,” and lack of core development can result in a predisposition to injury. In this class, every exercise requires core engagement, activated by proper breathing. Your instructor will lead you through challenging exercises performed in a seated, supine, prone, or side-lying position. In addition to spinal flexion and extension, this class incorporates side bending, torso rotation abduction (moving the limb away from the body’s center), and adduction (moving the limb toward the center). In addition to core strength, Pilates mat exercises enhance postural alignment, coordination, and flexibility.
