Learn Tips for Tending Tiny Trees at Chicago Botanic Garden

The 34th Annual Mid-America Bonsai Show & Sale includes a display of 200 plants

Bonsai growers from throughout the Midwest are showing off their skills at the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe this weekend.

The 34th Annual Mid-America Bonsai Show & Sale features a display of more than 200 trees from competitors vying for ribbons and a place in the national show in Rochester, New York. The exhibitors have been working with bonsai for five to 40 years and several will be at the garden during the show.

“They’re happy to answer questions about trees,” said Cat Nelson, president of the Midwest Bonsai Society.

If you’re interested in trying to grow bonsai yourself, Nelson said that the show is a great place to start. The event includes free demonstrations and lectures at 2 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Even kids can learn about the Japanese art form at $10 workshops from 1-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

More than a dozen vendors will be on hand selling trees, pots, tools and supplies.

“There’s a lot of poor quality bonsai on the market but all the stock we have here is healthy,” Nelson said. “A lot of people buy grocery store bonsai and they die immediately. If you get something that’s healthy to begin with, it will live longer, which will help people learn more about the art.”

The Mid-America Bonsai Show & Sale runs from noon to 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free.
