PETA to Protest Outside Old Orchard Mall Today

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals are gearing up to protest outside of Bebe in Old Orchard Mall today, Wednesday, March 27. The group's organizer said she is against the store selling vests that are made out of rabbit fur.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, will be holding a rally to speak out against women's clothing store Bebe in Old Orchard Mall today, March 27, according to the PETA Action Team website.

According to the rally's Facebook page, 14 people have confirmed their attendance. However, Georgia Argiris, the lead organizer of the event, said she's expecting about 20 people to attend, maybe more.

"They're selling fur vests for $300, and that's what we're protesting against," Argiris said. "This is my second Bebe protest. Last month, we were at Woodfield Mall."

The vests, according to Argiris, are made out of rabbit fur.

"Some people just don't understand it," Argiris said. "[People] will yell at us and say, 'Get a life,' but others ask for more information. The biggest reason we're doing this is because Bebe outsources their fur to China and there is no penalty for animal cruelty in China."

You'll see the group along Golf and Old Orchard roads from 2 p.m. - 3 p.m.

"I feel like rabbits are a living being that have a soul," she said. "They have a nervous system, they have emotions, and they all have personalities just like people do. I would never put a human's skin on my body.

"I feel that it's dominion over domination - we're supposed to protect them because they can't speak," Argiris added. "A rabbit can't speak and there's no reason for us not to speak for them."
