Burger Day 9

Burger Day 9

How did Burger Day originally start?

In 2002, a group of 5 friends decided to prank  the local McDonald’s by buying out all of the burgers in the restaurant. Seen  by other students as a fun activity the event grew for the next several years and became known  to local high school students as “Burger Day”. In year four, Burger Day incorporated fundraising activities to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana. Led by anywhere from 3-6 local High Schools students from both Glenbrook North and South, Burger Day has managed to raise over $35,000.00 in the past four years! This is a charity event organized by kids, led by kids, funded by kids, to benefit kids.

As mentioned above, once a prank, Burger Day is now a very unique and fun charity event to help garner funds and support for RMHC-CNI. The event consists of hundreds of high school students gathering in the parking lot of McDonald’s and getting ready for the traditional Burger Day rush. The Burger Day leadership team collects money for the burgers, adorned in their blues brother attire. From year one when barely one hundred burgers were purchased to Burger Day 8 when over 1,000 were sold, this is an exciting event that will just keep on growing.  Expanding from the sales of just burgers, Burger Day manages to raise money through selling unique, hand drawn, student designed T-Shirts, as well as collecting donations on a FirstGiving website. Last year, the addition of a burger eating competition between the two high schools began, and this year is highlighted by the addition of TWO new High Schools. Burger Day 9 will be a record year in both burgers purchased and dollars raised for the building of the world largest Ronald McDonald House, right here in Chicago.

What is Ronald McDonald House Charity?

Ronald McDonald Houses are built to provide families with a ‘home away from home’ while their children receive treatment at a nearby hospital. These houses provide comfortable living in private rooms for each family, which helps keep the family united in times of need.  Because these houses accommodate multiple families at a time, this allows for families to connect with others going through the same situation.  All of the existing Ronald McDonald Houses are located next to the countries best children’s hospitals, and with your support we can support the building of the newest Ronald McDonald House near Lurie Children’s.

Burger Day 9 Progress/Goals:

As mentioned above, this year we have added on an additional Burger Day event with the two new schools of Loyola Academy High School and New Trier High School.  Another added aspect of the event is the sponsorships leading up to the event.  This year, we have been receiving sponsorships from local businesses months before the event actually happens, these sponsorships have resulted in over $50,000 raised towards the charity months in advance.
