Beat Street Moving to Two New Locations

Beat Street, the eclectic Hubbard Woods store filled with games, toys and treats for everyone, will be moving at the end of August - and opening locations in both Kenilworth and a new shop in Winnetka.

The Kenilworth "satellite" (as they are being referred to) will be located at 521 Park Dr., while the new Winnetka location will be around the corner from its current shop, at 1081 Gage St.

"It's as if we split in half," owner Julie Windsor explained.

The current location's merchandise - and there's quite a bit of it - will be equally divided between the two locations, so customers should expect to see basically the same thing in both stores.

The decision to open two stores - both of which are smaller than the current one - came after Windsor's attempts to purchase buildings of her own failed.

"I'm excited for the satellite stores," she said. "This way, we can serve both communities without compromising what we do."

Windsor first opened Beat Street 10 years ago, when she started a store combining her interests of fashion, antiques and apart. Eventually, she realized that it was the things for Tweens between ages 8 and 15 that really sold.

"By the time kids are eight, they want something a little edgier [than what you find in traditional toy stores," she said. "We became kind of funkadelic, with mood lighting and lava lamps!"
