Monday, July 18

Doc Night

Where: The Woman's Library Club, 325 Tudor Ct., Glencoe

Come see the documentary that the The Washington Post calls a “fine, delicately nuanced portrait of an artist compelled by mysterious forces to create something utterly unique.”

Marwencol, released in 2010, chronicles a man’s return from a devastating attack. As his motor skills return, Mark Hogancamp constructs a scale model of a World War II Belgian village, which he photographs and later showcases in a New York gallery.

Bells Ring Out in the Garden

Where: Chicago Botanic Gardens, McGinley Pavilion, 1000 Lake Cook Rd., Glencoe
When: Concert begins at 7 p.m., until 7:45 p.m.
Price: Admission to the garden is free; concert is also free
Performance: Carillon Bells

As lights illuminate the (CBG) darkening Evening Island, attendees can enjoy an enchanting musical performance of carillon bells on a warm summer evening.

The island, one of nine in the gardens, will light up around dusk, “providing a stunning view,” said Carlene Andersen, visitor events and programs coordinator for the garden.

In the past, carillon bells have chimed everything from classical to popular music, including songs by the Beatles.

Hungry? Stop by the Garden Cafe or the Garden Grille. Visitors may also bring a picnic dinner to enjoy.

Tuesday, July 19

A Night with a Master

Where: Glencoe Public Library, 320 Park Ave., Glencoe
When: Program begins at 7 p.m., until 8 p.m.
Price: Free
Program: A Discussion About the Works of Michelangelo

In honor of the Vatican recently loaning out an official copy of Michelangelo’s Pietà to a Chicago area church, art historian Dr. Michelle Mishur will discuss the works tonight of the Renaissance master.

“They're enormously popular,” said head of circulation Danny Burdett of Mishur's art lectures. “(Attendees) usually say that they got much more out of art exhibits having been to the lectures.”

Examples of early works by Michelangelo, including La Pietà and the statue David, will be considered, as well as later examples from the artist. Mishur will also discuss Michelangelo’s sculpture-making process and provide historical context for his works.

Morning Chamber Music

Music and nature. Put the two together and you have an environment that's both serene and beautiful, Andersen said, “which makes it easy to sit, reflect and enjoy the...surroundings.”

In that vein, young musicians from the Midwest Young Artists academy will perform string chamber music Tuesday morning at McGinley Pavilion in the garden.

Outside food is not allowed, but if you intend to see the performance and would like a bite to eat, the Garden Cafe and Garden Grille will provide food.

Wednesday, July 20

Possibilities for Parents

Where: Leoleno, 976 Green Bay Rd., Winnetka
When: Lecture stars at 6 p.m., until 7 p.m.

Come join social worker Denaye Barahona, who has nearly a decade of experience coaching families and applying child behavior analysis to parenting.

Barahona will talk to parents during her lecture “Understanding Your Child's Behavior,” providing them with the tools to utilize “gentle discipline,” according to Leoleno owner Catharina Maerklin.

“If they have any questions when wondering about their child's behavior,” parents can ask Barahona during the event.

'Around the World in' 60 Minutes

Would you believe that one man lived on five different continents, and that he traveled to 100 different countries? No, neither did Patch, until we heard about world traveler Bill Helmuth.

On Wednesday Helmuth will discuss in 60 minutes his journeys around the world, showing pictures from places he went along the way.

During story time for kid Thursday, someone from the bookstore will read one-or-more stories accompanied by songs, drawings and activities related to the subject of the day.

“They're fresher, they can sit better (and) it's before nap time,” said Book Stall employee Nancy Randall of children who attend the storytelling event.

This weeks story subject, fairy tales, is sure to entertain both boys and girls alike.
