Jane Eyre, the 2011 version of the classic story by Charlotte Brontë, stars Mia Wasikowska as the kind and reverent Eyre and Michael Fassbender as the romantic, yet suspect, Rochester.

“Neither a radical updating nor a stiff exercise in middlebrow cultural respectability,” according to one New York Times review, “[the] film tells its venerable tale with lively vigor and an astute sense of emotional detail.”

Wednesday

Adam

Where: , 320 Park Ave., Glencoe
When: Movie at 1 p.m., discussion follows until 3 p.m.
Price: Free
Movie: Adam

In many romantic comedies, lovers are often flawless, well-spoken and sometimes incredibly well-off. Think of Tom Hanks playing a millionaire in You've Got Mail or Cary Grant, who's trademark hair shines, though his career as a painter doesn't, in An Affair to Remember.

In the 2009 movie Adam, though, we get a look at love, romance and its sometimes precarious nature. Played by Hugh Dancy, Adam suffers from Asperger's syndrome, an autism-spectrum disorder that hinders his ability to socialize with others. But that doesn't stop him from falling in love with his new neighbor, Beth, played by Rose Byrne, who shows him a world outside of his oblique box.

“By avoiding the romantic-comedy cliches of lesser fare...,” Adam, one Washington Times review said, “has given us characters to care about instead of laugh at and dispose of.”

Program: “Farm Dinners” Benefit

City Provisions chef Cleetus Friedman will serve a family-style meal with multiple courses at the Chicago Botanic Garden using locally grown ingredients that are fresh from the farm to your plate.

“The goal is to connect our communities with food,” Friedman said. “These dinners accomplish that.”

If you'd like to attend the dinner in a welcoming environment, Friedman added, then Farm Dinners in the garden is the place to be.

“[We want to] bring a group of strangers together,” he said, “and hope they leave as friends.”
