North Shore Art League at the Northfield Farmers' Market

Mental Health First Aid training course

  • When: Saturday, September 29, 2012, 9:00 am
  • Where: 213 Hazel Ave, Glencoe
  • Why Go?: The North Shore United Methodist Church will offer a two day Mental Health First Aid course at the church September 28-29, 2012. The nationally-recognized training initiative helps members of the public to improve their mental health literacy – helping them identify, understand and respond appropriately to signs of mental illness.

Stories and Harvesting at the Glencoe Community Garden

  • Why Go?: Join a librarian at the Glencoe Community Garden for an autumn-themed storytime, and then work together to help harvest fall vegetables.  The Glencoe Community Garden is located east of the Metra line along Green Bay Road just north of Shelton Park on Harbor Street.  If the weather is inclement, the storytime will be held at the library.

Books on the Chopping Block

  • When: Sunday, September 30, 2012, 2:00 pm
  • Where: Glencoe Public Library, 320 Park Ave, Glencoe
  • Why Go?: Get behind your right to read freely and celebrate Banned Books Week! City Lit Theater Company will return to the library to present a live concert reading of excerpts from the top ten most frequently challenged books of 2011. Since 2006, City Lit--a Chicago theater specializing in staged adaptations of literary material--has teamed up with the American Library Association’s Office of Intellectual Freedom in honor of Banned Books Week. The company’s actors perform Books on the Chopping Block at special events, libraries, and bookstores in and around Chicago all week long. The performance runs 50 minutes and is followed by a brief discussion. While the program is intended for adults, children in approximately grade 6 and up are welcome to attend.

After Hours Teen Reads Party--with authors Dan Krokos and Nancy Grossman

  • When: Sunday, September 30, 2012, 5:00 pm
  • Where: The Book Stall at Chestnut Court, 811 Elm St, Winnetka
  • Why Go?: We host authors Nancy Grossman (A World Away) and Dan Krokos (False Memory) at our After Hours Teen Reads Pizza Party. The store will be closed except to party guests. Our visiting authors will discuss their books and the writing process, answer questions from the audience, and sign copies of their novels. In addition, we’ll hear from several of our teen reviewers on their recommended new books, there will be lots of cool prizes and giveaways, and pizza will be served!  Save the date for this celebration of YA literature with new and exciting writers.  This event is perfect for teen lit fans ages 12 and up. It is free and open to the public, but registration is requested—we need to know how many pizzas to order! Participant may register in the store, or call us at 847-446-8880.

Weekend Warrior Yoga

Weekend Warrior Yoga. This class helps you stretch out and feel great after an active weekend, and improves flexibility, mental focus, balance, and oxygen uptake.
