Strings Attached: Untangling the Ethics of Incentives

Grant, a professor of political science and philosophy at Duke University, talks about the history, morality, and unintended consequences of the modern obsession with using incentives to change behavior. She explores cases from plea bargaining in criminal courts to paying students to earn good grades, and asks: can incentives be manipulative or exploitative, even if people are free to refuse them? Ruth is the daughter of Bernice Weissbourd, founder of Family Focus.
