Hieronymus Bosch: Art, Alchemy, and the Grotesque

Still outrageous after half a millennium, the paintings of Renaissance artist Hieronymus Bosch (ca. 1450-1516) have been interpreted as surrealist, pious, unorthodox, heretical, grotesque, and highly symbolic. Bosch’s keen interest in alchemy prompted him to blend science and religion in a very personal way.
