Film Screening: America The Beautiful

America the Beautiful, a powerful documentary which explores America's obsession with beauty and physical perfection, will be shown on Tuesday, September 28 at Niles North High School, 9800 N. Lawler in Skokie. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the movie will begin at 7:00 p.m. Haven Youth and Family Services, JCARES, Links - North Shore Youth Health Service, Response, and Niles North High School are joining together to sponsor the event. Shalva, Womencare and the Youth Job Center are supporting partners.

The film takes a hard look at the consequences of a constant barrage of media messages that all focus on a similar theme: you're not good enough for anyone to love unless you look like a supermodel or rock star. Throughout the evening, we'll examine how our obsession is contributing to a rise in low self-esteem, body disorders and unhealthy behaviors – especially for the beauty industry's largest consumers – young women and girls.

Darryl Roberts, the film's director, writer, and narrator and Matthew Selekman, MSW, LCSW, local and nationally known expert on adolescent self-harm, will lead a discussion following the movie. The sponsors are actively looking for other Supporting Partners. Inquires should be addressed to Janice Liten at Links, 847-441-6191 ext. 7 or counseling@linksyouth.org.
