General Weather Discussion for the Week Ahead

High pressure will be moving off to the east today with showers and t-storms currently out to the west across Iowa and Missouri and downstate Illinois. Clouds will increase during the second half of the day with an increased risk of showers later this evening and tonight with rain tapering off by Saturday morning.

Parts of the weekend will be active with a few t-storm clusters to keep an eye on. Because a front will become stalled out across the northern half of the state, additional clusters of storms are possible by Saturday afternoon into Saturday evening with rain settling south of the local after 7 p.m. or 8 p.m. As the front pushes south, winds will shift in off the lake and this will help to bring in drier and more stable air to northeast Illinois. Another front dropping in from the north may cause a few sprinkles or light showers by Sunday evening with most areas staying dry.

A large area of high pressure will stay to the west through the first half of next week with a few waves of showers and t-storms Tuesday and Wednesday near the front. As the front pushes east, several days of nice weather is expected from late Wednesday through Friday with active weather affecting the eastern half of the U.S. due to a possible tropical system developing.

Temperatures will average closer to or even a little above normal through much of the period with warmer temps expected by the middle and end of the week on the backside of the high pressure ridge. This means highs in the mid to upper 80s with higher levels of humidity.

Your Weekly Weather Fact:

Gust front: A boundary found ahead of a t-storm that separates cold storm downdrafts from warm humid surface air. Winds in this phenomenon are strong and can gust 60 to 80 mph. The gust front is typically found several miles in front of a t-storm and can suddenly accelerate causing very strong winds for a period of several minutes.
