General Weather Discussion for the Week Ahead

High pressure that brought us nice weather over the past several days is beginning to move off to the east with an increasing chance of rain developing during the weekend. As the upper-level winds shift to the southwest, this will allow for a front to move back to the north over the Midwest. Another front coming down from the Plains will also help to produce occasional rounds of rain and a few t-storms over the next few days.

The best chance of rain today will be to the west closer to the Mississippi River with isolated storms possible just after midnight. It appears an area of showers and t-storms will approach from the west for a time Saturday morning with the heaviest rain and strongest storms occurring south of I-88. Since the storm system will be slowing down, another wave of showers will develop during the afternoon and may linger into the evening. Additional energy moving through the northwest flow will cause instability showers on Sunday with generally light amounts of rain expected.

A sprawling area of high pressure will build back into the area again by late Sunday with pleasant weather returning to much of the Upper Midwest Monday, Tuesday and much of Wednesday. This will result in abundant sunshine with comfortable levels of humidity.

The pattern will turn stormy again between Aug. 17 and Aug. 20 with a few more clusters of storms again as the front returns north. An unstable airmass and a series of upper-level disturbances will produce locally heavy rain and possible severe weather during this time.

Temperatures over the period will average close normal with lows mostly in the low to mid 60s with high temperatures in the upper 70s to lower 80s. It may warm up and begin to feel more humid by the middle and end of next week as winds shift around to the south bringing up warmer air.

Your Weekly Weather Fact:

The total amount of rain so far this month is around two inches. This is about a half-inch above normal. Average rain in the month of August is 4.62 inches.
