Your Week Ahead: Feb. 10 to Feb. 17

A more wintry week is in store for the area as the pattern becomes more active.

Temperature Trends: Temperatures will average near to a little below normal

Precipitation Trends: Precipitation will average a little above normal

Weekend Pattern: The beginning of the weekend looks rather active with lake-effect snow ongoing into Saturday morning over parts of the area. North winds coming in off the lake will produce favorable conditions for lake snow with the heaviest snow amounts impacting central and southern Cook County and into northwest Indiana. As winds shift around to the northwest by early Saturday, the lake set-up will break down and shift to the east. Much of the weekend overall looks precipitation-free with below-average temperatures.

Early to Midweek Pattern: As high pressure moves off to the east, the next system develops as a warm front moves north toward the central Plains. This will cause an overrunning area of light snow to develop and move into northern Illinois by Monday afternoon into Tuesday morning with around an inch to an inch and a half of accumulation likely. Another storm developing around the middle of the week may come close on Wednesday and Thursday with a mix of rain and snow which will change to all snow by Thursday with possibly several inches somewhere close to our area.

Late Week Pattern: Back to a northwest flow pattern with a few clipper systems bringing minor amounts of snow by next weekend.

Temperatures: Temperatures will turn much colder today and through the weekend with highs in the 20s and lows mainly in the teens. Temperatures will moderate somewhat Monday through Wednesday with highs in the mid 30s and lows in the mid to upper 20s. As the flow becomes northwest, colder air will filter back into our region with highs in the mid to upper 20s toward the end of the week and next weekend.

Snow Watch

Seasonal snow total so far (Northeast Cook County-as of Feb. 9): 13.4 inches
Snow total so far (February): Trace
Average snow in February: 9.1 inches

Significant Snow Storm Index: A storm system toward next Wednesday or Thursday could produce several inches in northern Illinois.
