The 'Little House' in Winnetka

Prairie Home. Across from Crow Island School in Winnetka sits the Schmidt-Burnham Log House, one of the oldest homes in Cook County. Visitors are welcom throughout the summer and into fall.

Take a trip back to the mid-19th Century, where you'll find the life of a pioneer was one untouched by modern convenience. Constructed around 1837, the Schmidt-Burnham Log House “remains nearly the same as when it was (first) built,” according to Winnetka officials.

"It was a unique period in time that you don't see anywhere else around here," said Patti Van Cleave, executive director for the Winnetka Historical Society. "This was before Winnetka became Winnetka."

Now one of the oldest homes in Cook County, the log house has stood as a symbol of family life in Winnetka for over 170 years.
