Leprechauns in April? Thank Mother Nature for the Delay

Winnetka's Leprechaun Leap is being pushed back from March to April due to the amount of ice on the lake.

Winnetka’s Leprechaun Leap is supposed to be a chilly event — jumping in Lake Michigan in March is not for the faint of heart. But, you need to actually be able to find some water to jump into.

Due to the persistent layer of ice on the lake, the park district’s event is being pushed back from the St. Patrick's Day-themed date of March 15 to April 26. “We are hopeful that we will not have to chop through ice to get to Lake Michigan,” the district said in a note about the change of date.

If you’re interested in a hopefully slightly balmier dip in the lake, you can sign up here. Proceeds go to the North Suburban Special Recreation Association.
