Glencoe Social Club Brings the Community Closer

Club helps both newcomers and lifelong residents make new friends.

For some people, the hardest part about moving to a new city isn't house-hunting or packing up your old home — it's meeting people and becoming a part of the new community. This is where the Glencoe Social Club (formerly called Glencoe Newcomers and Neighbors) aims to help.

The club — which welcomes newcomers, lifelong residents and everyone in between — hosts a variety of events throughout the year in order to form a sense of community and help members meet new friends. The events include "Guy's Nights," family ice skating events and beach parties. They also host three (soon to be four) weekly playgroups and a monthly bookclub. The Glencoe Social Club also presents new residents with a folder full of information about the community, as well as an invitation to join the club.

"I think that it fosters a greater sense of community than just buying a house," Rebecca Hoffman, who is in charge of marketing and advertising for the club, said.

Stephanie Kohn, president of the Glencoe Social Club, said that people tend to become fast friends at the club-sponsored events, as they already have things in common.

"Choosing where to live is such a personal decision," Kohn said. "So you have an immediate connection with someone because you both thought that the community was right for you."

Kohn said that when she moved to Glencoe from Highland Park, the playgroups provided a great opportunity for her to meet people in the community.

"Playgroups for me where a big draw," she said. "Even coming from closeby, I still wanted a way to get connected and ... I couldn't believe that [this Club existed]."

The club has been revamped since Kohn took over as president, with a new website and an increase of events, which they make a point to host at a variety of locations throughout the community, from the beach to parks to private residences.

"It's really a group that celebrates the town," Hoffman said. "There are a lot of nice things that this town offers, and we use that."

The Glencoe Social Club costs $40 per year per household, and includes free members-only events and discount-rates to other events. For more information or to join the club, visit the club online at http://www.glencoesocialclub.com.
