New Trier Township Awards 155 Community Support Grants to Residents

The number of grants to be awarded for the New Trier Township Community Support Grants for Persons with Disabilities program for the fiscal year 2013-14 will be 155, a 52% increase over the number from fiscal year 2012-13. Award checks will be distributed by March 31, 2014. The deadline for the applications for fiscal year 2013-14 was December 31, 2013. The Township credits the rise in the number of applications to an increase in awareness of the program due to a publicity effort in combination with continued need and the elimination of other sources of support programs.

Township Supervisor Paddie Brennen explains, “Community Support Grants for Persons with Disabilities provide financial assistance that helps in meeting some of the extraordinary expenses related to a person with a disability. The Township anticipated an increase in applications this year, and we are glad we can support these individuals and families in the care of a family member’s special needs.” All qualified applicants were funded from a budget of $175,000 so each individual will receive an award of $1,129.00. The Board of Trustees reviews funding for the Community Support Grants program annually.

The Community Support Grants program provides financial assistance to residents to meet some of the special medical and interventional needs and unusual expenses related to a person with a disability. There are no age or income restrictions on these grants. Community Support Grants can be used for therapeutic services, respite care, or any of a number of costs involved with the care of the person with a disability. Children or adults with diagnosed disabilities are eligible, including autism spectrum disorders; developmental and/or cognitive delay; multiple impairments; mental disorders, to name a few categories. In addition, residents with certain diagnosed compromising physical impairments are also eligible to apply for the Community Support Grants program. For a more full description of eligibility, please visit the Township website at www.newtriertownship.com or contact Jeanne Winsted Rosser at 847.446.8201 or jwinstedrosser@newtriertownship.com. The next Community Support Grants cycle will begin in the fall, and applications for those fiscal year 2014-15 grants will be accepted in fourth quarter of 2014.
