Originally published Jan 23, 2014

Glencoe police put out an urgent call for help Wednesday night as they continued to search for an 82-year-old man with dementia who had been missing for more than 24 hours in frigid weather.

Police said the man, Harvey Caplin, was last seen by his wife at their home in the 800 block of Forestway Drive at roughly 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night. Police said the woman left the couple’s home briefly, and upon her return, realized her husband was gone.

Glencoe Police Lt. Richard Bookie said police have received several tips from residents placing Caplin in the vicinity of Dundee Road at the south entrance to the Chicago Botanic Gardens at roughly 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, walking westbound in the eastbound lanes in the roadway.

Caplin, who was known to walk to the local Starbucks, library and grocery stores, may be wearing a black leather jacket, white t-shirt and dark blue running pants, Bookie said.
