Come Discover the Darker Side of Literature! FUN CLASS at Harper College: GOTHIC IN AMERICA

Vampires, ghosts and monsters form the characters of this class as you interpret the symbolism from both the media of today and the classic literature of Bram Stoker and Edgar Allan Poe. In literature, movies, and comic strips, the Gothic is a recurring theme and is currently experiencing a surge in popularity.

This non-credit course was designed as a fun-filled and eye-opening exploratory survey on the Gothic genre in American literature and popular culture with classroom activities that would delight students of all ages. It serves as both an enjoyable and entertaining intellectual foray into a well-known and popular genre, as well as a refresher for incoming college students to brush up and develop skills needed for the more demanding credit classes.

Writer and educator, Mihaela Stoica will help you develop a deeper understanding of the themes that define the Gothic genre while examining its cultural significance. Born in Romania, Mihaela is an Illinois certified teacher and is the author of the novel Shepherd, which deals with themes of superstition and beliefs drawn from mysticism and folklore. Come discover the darker side of literature!
