Residents Invited to Help Commemorate 9/11 Anniversary

2,977 flags will be planted in the Village Green in memory of 9/11 victims.

Winnetka residents are invited to help continue the town's Patriot Day tradition this Tuesday in the Village Green.

In 2008, Genevieve Nielsen, a high school student, proposed planting 2,977 flags at the Centopath on the Village Green in memory of each person killed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Since then, the flag planting has become a Winnetka tradition.

Flags will be planted on Sept. 10 at 4 p.m. and removed at dusk on Sept. 11. Those interested in participating should meet in the Village Green at 4 p.m. Flags will be provided.
