Hubbard Woods Could Soon Have 12 New Flower Boxes at Intersections

The flower planter boxes are part of a broader initiative to spruce up Winnetka business districts, Chicago Tribune reported.

Winnetka officials are expected to approve 12 new flower planter boxes at cost of $7,900 for intersections in Hubbard Woods as part of a broader effort to spruce up Winnetka business districts, Chicago Tribune reported.  Winnetka council members previously approved hanging 132 flower baskets through the three business districts—Elm Street, Indian Hill and Hubbard Woods—but am now considering planter boxes instead of the hanging baskets for Hubbard Woods because most poles along Green Bay Road are already encumbered with signs, Chicago Tribune reported.  Related Coverage

Tell Us: Should Minors Be Banned From Sunless Tanning Beds?

A legislation to ban teen tanning in Illinois heads to Gov. Pat Quinn.

Legislation to ban minors from indoor tanning beds was sent to Gov. Pat Quinn on Tuesday after being approved by the Illinois Senate. House Bill 188, sponsored by Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont), would ban Illinois minors age 17 and younger from UV tanning beds. Currently, minors ages 14 to 17 are allowed to tan if they provide a parent's signature. Spray-on tanning is exempt from the legislation, as is phototherapy, which applies to situations where a physician supervises tanning when it is necessary to treat a medical condition. Radogno said in a press release that she sponsored the bill to protect Illinois minors from the serious health risks involved with indoor tanning beds. “Not only do children not realize there …

Proposed Stormwater Fee in Winnetka, Would Be Among Highest in U.S.

Winnetka residents could see an average stormwater utility fee of about $360, Chicago Tribune reports.

Winnetka residents could have an average annual stormwater utility fee of about $360—among the highest of such fees in the country—if Winnetka council members approve a $41 million stormwater management plan at its meeting next week, Chicago Tribune reported.  The village plans to hold community meetings to pitch the project and gather inputs from residents this summer. Winnetka resident Jim Wyant is thrilled the village is undertaking the project, he recently told council members that homeowners have spent more money fixing their homes in the past five years than what the village is considering to spend on stormwater management, Chicago Tribune reported.  Winnetka is also considering a $34.6 million stormwater tunnel beneath Willow Road…

Medical Marijuana Bill Passed by Illinois Senate; Quinn Last Hurdle

Passed by a 35-21 vote, the bill now goes to the desk of Gov. Pat Quinn, who has not yet said whether he intends to sign it.

By a vote of 35-21, the Illinois Senate approved legislation on Friday that would allow doctors in the state to prescribe marijuana as pain relief for severe medical conditions. The bill now goes to Gov. Pat Quinn for his signature. According to the Chicago Tribune, the bill covers 33 specific conditions—including multiple sclerosis, cancer and HIV infection—and includes several controls, with a four-year trial program, dosage limits, fingerprinting, background checks and licensed dispensing centers. “This bill is filled with walls to keep this limited,” the paper quoted sponsoring Sen. Bill Haine (D-Alton), who urged lawmakers to pass the legislation as a compassionate measure for those suffering with extreme pain. In opposition, Sen. …

Registration for launching permits is now open.

Winnetka’s Lloyd Park boat ramp will open this summer thanks to April’s storm, which has helped lake levels rise to the point where the base of the ramp now has four feet of water, more than the three feet of water required to open the ramp, Chicago Tribune reported.  The ramp will open May 25, two days later than usual, and registration for launching permits opened Monday, with priority given to Winnetka residents, Chicago Tribune reported.  Related Coverage

Schneider Ties Student Success to School Rankings

North Shore Congressman, who has been reaching out to students since January, calls local academic achievement a reason so many of Illinois’s top schools are in the 10th District.

Since taking office in January, Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Deerfield) has visited six schools in the 10th Congressional District and met with students in other places including his offices in Washington and Lincolnshire. When asked by students at Learn Charter School at Great Lakes May 3 about educational opportunities, Schneider was quick to point out students from the District attend nearly half of the state’s top 20 high schools. Earlier: Kirk, Durbin, Schneider Tour New School as Sequester Removes Shine “Nine of the top 20 public high schools in Illinois educate students from the 10th District,” Schneider said referring to the fact local schools were ranked in the top 20 by U.S. News and World Report. Dan it's dangerous to have a expansion plug as I've witnessed myself from this previous flood 3 weeks ago. The pressure was so high that it forced the sewage back up to come out of our basement toilet and tub. If you don't have one in basement...the water pressure can bring up the backup to main floor bathroom toilet. Fortunately that didn't happen to me. While cleaning up the flood though...the …   more ›
