Beginning and experienced haiku poets will meet 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 12 at Winnetka Public Library, 768 Oak St., Winnetka, to share their poetry and perfect it for publication. Free and open to the public, this is sponsored by the Midwest Region of the Haiku Society of America. Pre-registration is required.
Those who don't write haiku are invited to listen.
Haiku is meditative poetry, one to four lines. It captures the moment, and has a reference to nature or human nature. It originated in Japan in the 1600s and is considered an international art form, written in more than 25 languages.
HSA is a not-for-profit, all volunteer organization to promote the writing and appreciation of haiku in English. Its website is www.hsa-haiku.org.
HSA's 2013 meetings will also include Haikufest, from 2 to 3:30 p.m., Sunday, April 7 at Winnetka Public Library. This will feature an introduction to haiku, along with readings from about 12 poets.
In the fall, a three-day symposium with haiku experts from throughout the U.S. and abroad will be held Friday through Sunday, Sept. 27-29 in Evanston. The symposium will include a panel discussion, workshops, lectures, Japanese art, music, and yoga. The latter will be held in conjunction with HSA's national meeting.

More About Winnetka Public Library
The Winnetka Public Library offers an extensive collection of literature, audiobooks, films and periodicals in its main location. Many other materials are also available at the Northfield branch.
