Meet Newbery Award-winning author Clare Vanderpool
The Book Stall at Chestnut Court (811 Elm Street in Winnetka) is delighted to welcome author Clare Vanderpool, reading from and discussing her new novel for young people, Navigating Early. Ms. Vanderpool’s award-winning debut novel for children, Moon Over Manifest, has just been released in paperback. This event is free and open to the public, and great for readers ages 10 to adult.
Booklist says of her Newbery Award-winning book, Moon Over Manifest, “Vanderpool weaves humor and sorrow into a complex tale involving murders, orphans, bootlegging, and a mother in hiding. With believable dialogue, vocabulary and imagery appropriate to time and place, and well-developed characters, this rich and rewarding first novel is ‘like sucking on a butterscotch. Smooth and sweet.’” Publishers Weekly is equally enthusiastic about the new novel, Navigating Early, set during World War Two at an East Coast boarding school, saying,” This multilayered, intricately plotted story has a kaleidoscopic effect, blurring the lines between reality and imagination, coincidence and fate.” A story of friendship, action, and sadness, Navigating Early has the evocative language and timeless feel of a classic.
