DESCRIPTION:&ldquo\;What&rsquo\;s the fun of an outdoor stroll...&rdquo\;
Bumble Bee students at Harkness House for Children recently asked their
  teachers\, &ldquo\;...when we can&rsquo\;t all go together as a class?&
rdquo\;\nDespite their relatively young ages--16 months to age two--the
toddlers at this premier\, early childhood center\, actually made a conv
incing argument. With 10 students in their Bumble Bee class\, the school
 &rsquo\;s only source of transportation--a four-seat stroller--meant tha
t the class would need to be separated when venturing out from its home
at the Winnetka Community House.\nAnd that idea didn&rsquo\;t make for\,
well\, happy campers.\nTaking a page from schoolmasters of days past\,
Harkness House teachers offered a timeless\, school tradition: a bake sa
le. Gathering baking ingredients from its grocery partner\, The Grand Fo
od Center\, Harkness teachers will present a Summer Bake Sale from 4-6 p
 .m. on Thursday\, June 21\, at the Winnetka Community House\, 630 Lincol
n Ave.\, Winnetka. The proceeds will go directly to the purchase of a ne
w\, six-seat stroller.\n"We invite the entire Winnetka community to samp
le our tasty\, summer time treats\," says Harkness fundraising chairpers
on Jaimie Walnes. "we'll have homemade cupcakes\, brownies\, pies\, whol
e cakes and cookies for sale."\nTo sweeten the event even more\, The Gra
nd Food Center will also provide the Grand Prize: a drawing for a $100 G
ift Card.\n&ldquo\;We&rsquo\;re incredibly pleased that The Grand has ag
reed to help us again in our fundraising efforts\,&rdquo\; says Kristi P
ettice\, Harkness House Assistant Director (and Bumble Bee teacher) who
spearheaded the bake sale idea.\nAccording to Pettice\, the early childh
ood center&rsquo\;s not-for-profit status means that it must raise funds
on its own for equipment. The school recently purchased a new computer
and carpeting with proceeds from a Grand Food Center-sponsored fundraise
r earlier this spring and an alumni donation.\n&ldquo\;While The Grand h
as the best bakery in town\, we&rsquo\;re just glad that they&rsquo\;re
allowing us a chance to showcase our own baking skills\,&rdquo\; Pettice
adds.\nHarkness House for Children provides early childhood learning fo
r children from six weeks to kindergarten. The school specializes in inf
ant and early childhood development\, and maintains low teacher-to-stude
 nt ratios.\nFor more information\, call 847-501-2549\, or visit www.hark
