Police Release Name of Winnetka Store Robbed Last Week

Creme de la Creme, at 903 Green Bay Rd., was the fourth retail store at which the lifeguard bandit attempted to steal cash in the past week.

Creme de la Creme was the most recent store robbed by the so-called lifeguard bandit, Winnetka police said Monday. Earlier: Fourth North Shore Armed Robbery Attempted in Three Days A man entered Creme de la Creme, located at 903 Green Bay Rd. in Hubbard Woods, on Saturday with a knife. He demanded cash from the store clerk, then left the gift store with $240. Police previously alerted the public to the robbery, but had not named the store until Monday. Winnetka Deputy Chief of Police Joseph Pellus told Patch on Monday afternoon that the police are investigating the string of burglaries that occurred last week and also affected retail stores in Northfield, Glenview and Wilmette. Poll: Should Chicago Have a Casino?

Illinois lawmakers are again looking to expand gambling options in Illinois.

Illinois lawmakers are considering plans to add more casinos as the state continues to grapple with budget woes. The latest proposals would place casinos in Danville, Rockford and Waukegan. Another proposal would allow for slot machines to be operated at race tracks like Arlington Park, the Alton Daily News reported. The bills are sponsored by Terry Link (D-Waukegan) in the Senate and Lou Lang (D-Skokie) in the House. Gov. Pat Quinn has called the legislation to, once again, expand gambling in Illinois "a distraction." Meanwhile, behind the scenes, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has been pushing for a Chicago casino. A Chicago casino is something that officials in the city long have sought. As far back at 1993, Mayor Daley proposed an $800 …

Beer and Wine Garden Planned for Winnetka Sidewalk Sale

The Winnetka-Northfield Chamber of Commerce aims to start a new tradition by serving beer and wine on the second day of the event, July 21.

During a board meeting earlier this month, the Winnetka Village Board supported a new policy direction for the Winnetka Sidewalk Sale this summer. For the first time, shoppers over the age of 21 will be able to drink beer and wine in a temporary streetscape garden on Saturday, July 21. "It's something that we were thinking of doing to energize the sidewalk sale because sales are waning," said Terry Dason, director of the Winnetka-Northfield Chamber of Commerce, in an interview with Patch. The sale, which goes from Friday, July 20 through Saturday, July 21 this year, has been a Winnetka tradition for more than three decades and is organized by the Chamber. Selling XXL cubs t-shirts and crappy earrings bought in Chinatown does not appeal to the high level of taste of the north shore consumer. Get …   more ›
