Supporting the World’s Frontline Health Workers

In the United States, polio was successfully eradicated in 1977. For years, this disease plagued the world and took the lives of countless children, and left many others disabled. Today, because of increased government support, scientific advances in immunization, and humanitarian groups like Rotary International that deploy dedicated health workers for vaccination campaigns, polio is now endemic in only 3 countries. Soon, many experts believe, polio can be completely eradicated from the world through access to life-saving vaccines.

This is terrific news and it demonstrates the impact of U.S. leadership on the lives of children around the world.

Today, the leading killers of children in the developing world are completely preventable and treatable diseases, pneumonia and diarrhea. Combined, they claim the lives of more than 2 million children under the age of five die every year. Ten countries in the developing world account for 60% of these child deaths. However, with greater access to health education and resources, these countries could save the lives of children.

Earlier this year, I co-sponsored the Frontline Health Workers Resolution (H.Res. 734). This is a bipartisan resolution that is aimed at recognizing the importance of community health workers throughout the world who are providing health care to the poorest of the poor areas. These individuals often have to travel days by foot and rely on a backpack of supplies to deliver life-saving health care to rural communities. In short, without them, millions of families throughout the world would never receive health care because they live too far away to access hospitals, clinics, doctors and nurses.

By providing vaccinations, basic antibiotics to treat pneumonia, oral rehydration therapy and zinc to treat diarrhea, and other health services, frontline health workers are often the difference between life and death.  According to RESULTS, the Ethiopian government trained 40,000 community health workers and sent them out into the rural regions across that country. Five years later, there was a 50% reduction in malaria related deaths. This is impressive and speaks volume to the effectiveness of frontline health workers.

This month, UNICEF reported under-five child deaths dropped from 12 million a year in 1990 to 6.9 million a year in 2010 thanks to many of the services provided by frontline health workers. This is an incredible accomplishment, but more must be done.

In order to continue to lower child mortality rates and to prevent further deaths from pneumonia and diarrhea, I will continue to support efforts by our nation and others to support frontline health workers.  By aiding those most in need, health workers throughout the world are saving children and teaching them important health skills that they can carry with them for the rest of their lives. I applaud those working on the frontlines and know that you are helping to end preventable childhood deaths.

Thank you very much, Congressman Dold, for broadcasting this insightful piece about the importance of foreign aid and the power we have to save lives of those most in need. It has been a pleasure to meet with you and your staff when I've represented Shot@Life and RESULTS to ask for your help to take action on global health. Thank you for co-signing H.Res. 734 and helping to educate your district on the need to make these modest investments with such great returns!

Thank you King Dold for fooling people into thinking your job is to watch over the world. You are 10th District's representative you moron! How you dare spend time and money on other countries...what you fixed all problems at home in your district? Stop acting like you were elected Un Secretary General...you are just one little cheap owner of Rose Pest which you turned into a plantation, you pay no overtime to your serfs but here you are yapping about who knows what corner of the world. Northfield...your employees there have no health care from you nor a paycheck big enough to get on their own so shut up you hypocrite, God-wanna be. All these people praising you have no idea the greedy loser that you are. I hope voters kick you out of Congress, you are a little man with a company and a house from daddy and mommy and paranoic dreams of greatness.

Thank you for your support of H.Res. 734 and for understanding the valuable work the members of these organizations do to help promote global health. The end of polio is in sight, and groups such as RESULTS and the UN Foundation Shot@Life understand that vaccines work.

In the past 30 years, the number of children under 5 dying every year around the world has been cut in half. We've achieved this through increased access to health care, including vaccine and antibiotics to fight common killers like pneumonia and diarrhea.
But it isn't enough to cut child deaths in half when nearly 20,000 children still die every day from treatable and preventable diseases.
We have the knowledge and resources to ensure every child can have a 5th birthday. It will be up to our political leaders to give this issue the priority it deserves.
This summer, the U.S., India, Ethiopia co-hosted a Call to Action to create a roadmap to end preventable child deaths within a generation. As a first step toward achieving this goal, Congress should preserve funding for global child health and other aid programs, which save lives with less than 1 percent of the federal budget.

Congressman Dold, I also want to thank you and your staff for being so supportive of the work we do at RESULTS and Shot@Life. By signing onto H. Congressman, you voted against the Affordable Care Act that will bring affordable healthcare to millions of Americans. Your OP ED fails to mention the importance of healthcare right here in America. I'm all for foreign aid, and apparently you are too. I guess where we differ is that I am also for affordable healthcare for all Americans. Something you voted against.

Increased Total State involvement in the health insurance market will do nothing for affordability, especially when supply of health care is not addressed.

The State cannot revoke the laws of economics through legislation.

Indeed the only way is to get the insurance industry out of health care since they just add 20% to the cost with NO ADDED VALUE!

RB - the only problem with the ACA is that it did nothing for AFFORDABILITY - that was the big lie. The Democrats gave big Pharma LONGER patent times for drugs - how does the lack of generics HELP affordability. Also, the "savings" promised are by cutting payments to doctors and hospitals. You do realize that is what they do for Medicade now and that is the reason why some doctors no longer take or limit the patients they accept who are on Medicade.

The Democrats moved to create an "equal" health plan for the rest of us (excludes themselves and union cronies) - unfortunately, it will be an equally BAD one.

His vote against the Affordable Healthcare Act is a better look at his real feelings about healthcare. The resolution is a show of support for vaccinations and such in third world countries etc. It's an attempt to advertise something positive about healthcare that he is not responsible for when he did something to try to take affordable healthcare from women and children here in America. He is accountable for his vote to abolish the Affordable Care Act. Dold is a Tea Party Favorite having earned their extremist support last election. Believe me, the Tea Party is not for US aided vaccinations in Ethiopia.

Gary, it does nothing. He did it for the PR. I'd like to see him spending his time on something more substantive like the fiscal cliff, American healthcare, the deficit....you know the little stuff. It's amazing how many people have suddenly created accounts and generated so many over the top positive comments.

He voted to defund Public health programs here in the USA.
Now, He's doing so many pro forma type votes that mean nothing but look good to some people. Peeling back the cover leads to the truth about his right wing agenda that is not friendly toward people needing healthcare or public aid. This resolution funds nothing, its like a power point. Nothing new. The fact that he's in a campaign opens up rebuttle to his campaigning. It's fair game and worthwhile to point out his many failings for the tenth district.

How has he supported health care in the USA? He voted to dump the Affordable Care Act, While he continues to receive the Federal Employees Healthcare program. His insurance cost him about $350 per month including his wife! Let him drop out of that, if he doesn't want normal people to have affordable healthcare. He voted to change Medicare into a voucher program, unprotected from inflation. He voted to take tax dollars away from the most vulnerable, the elderly, the disabled, The uninsured. How in the heck is he supporting "saving lives of children in the US too"? Maybe his vote with Ryan to outlaw abortion except for rape and incest? Is that your idea he is saving children? Must be.
You're being snookered!

You will end up like the Canadians with money who come here when they actually NEED something. Wait, the US will no longer be here for them to come to...

For those commenters who supporting both global health related foreign aid funding and the Affordable Health Care Act, I encourage you to take action on both. We at RESULTS, have lobbied extensively on both of issues and many others that help people living in poverty. We are a non-partisan, anti-poverty lobbying organization made largely of everyday volunteers. Our requests asking the Congressman to sign onto this resolution are the same actions that led Rep. Jan Schakowksy (D-9th) to sign onto the same bill. Poverty and childhood survival are non-partisan issues. We believe it is appropriate to praise the action of any sitting senator or representative for speaking out for people in need in our country or around the world.

Does anyone want to examine the real reason for much of the so called poverty that affects certain groups disproportionately in this country? Nah. It's so much easier to keep handing out entitlements- the true opiates of the masses. Barack Obama will go down in history as the Enabler in Chief. He's enabled millions of people out of jobs: rates for blacks & women are in the double digits, enabled Iran to develop WMD's, enabled the US debt to triple, enabled 47 million people to live on food stamps, enabled terrorists to kill Americans at Ft. Hood,Benghazi, enabled despots in S. America to develop their oil riches w/ our tax dollars while disabling America's, enabled his friends to huge amounts of tax payer dollars to fund unsuccessful green tech capital ventures, enabled our country to be looked at as a laughing stock to the world. Let's enable him and any other politician that has spit on the Good Old American Way out of office Now!

This Resolution is the first step in recognizing that everyone needs and deserves basic healthcare. I had a baby die in my arms as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Niger because there was no basic healthcare for miles. Next step it to ensure that everyone, here and abroad, has access to the most basic services needed for life.

Am really excited by Congressman Robert Dold courage to co-sponsored the Frontline Health Workers Resolution (H.Res. 734). This means a lot to the hard to reach, marginalized and unreached populations of developed countries. The
World Health Organization estimates a shortage of at least one million frontline health workers, particularly in Africa and parts of Asia. Millions more existing health workers could save millions lives if they well trained and supported. Am sure this will stimulate greater investments in frontline health workers in the developing world to save more lives and foster healthier communities! Kudos Congressman Robert and we need more Roberts in the world!

Hello? Do you Dold supporters who are so excited about his 'bold' effort to reach the underdeveloped world with healthcare is simply a resolution thanking those people that provide the care? He's done nothing to provide the care. Additionally, here at home he voted to take the care available to the uninsured through the Affordable Care Act away? He voted against having your children on your insurance until age 26. He voted against insurance companies being required to insure those with pre-existing conditions, etc. This is an obvious PR campaign. Evidence is he is against affordable healthcare.

Walter, your comments would be fun to read if they weren't so repetitious. If you want to continue the fiscal train wreck that is Springfield, Illinois, continue voting for Democrats who have derailed that train. It's that simple. You want continuing failure, vote for it! The Democrats you elect will blindly follow the wishes of Michael Madigan and/or Senator Cullerton, both of whom are responsible for the wreckage. Madigan in particular has been at it for over 40 years?

Don't criticize the rest of us who are fed up and are demanding something better. And don't demand that we vote for Brad Schneider, who is on record as promising to completely toe the Democratic party line in place of someone who doesn't completely toe the his party line.

President Obama demanded that the Bush Tax Cut issue be dealt with after the election along with the massive federal spending cuts we will be facing. Both kick in on 1/1/13. President Obama puts his reelection ahead of the fiscal catastrophe facing our nation according to Bob Woodward of the Washington Post. You know, the fellow who exposed Watergate back in the day.

And I love VP Biden's admission that the middle class has taken a beating the last four years. The last four years that Obama and Biden have been holding office! You voting for more of that too?

But then, there is no intelligence test for voters who demand more of the same these days!

See? Not one mention of a GOP candidate and his/her ideas. For the record, I haven't seen too many ideas from across the aisle either so calling me someone who wants more of the same is inaccurate. Repetitious? You're like a broken record. I'll continue to push for detailed ideas from every candidate instead of attacks on the incumbents. Obviously, you aren't up to the task.

Did you read the Wall Street Journal today? Romney is finally leaking a few more details. He plans to cap tax deductions at $17k to pay for his reduction in the income tax for the wealthy. That will hit the middle class. Add up your Mortgage interest, your property tax, healthcare deduction, state taxes etc....a middle class household gets there pretty fast. His fat cat brothers.....they will love paying less income tax while the middle class picks most of the cut up. That's what I'm worried about. Louis talks of Madigan while Rommey plans to destroy the middle class. Dold? Just a Cantor, Boehner and Romney twin.

Congressman Dold,
PBS just broadcast an amazing documentary called "Half The Sky:Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide" on Oct 1 & 2. It was very powerful to hear Dr. Edna Adan talking about a maternity hospital she helped build in Somaliland (which has a very high maternal & infant mortality rate) & how she is training young women to be midwives & healthcare workers, so that they can go out into all of the different areas of that country and HELP women in the community. THIS kind of work, which directly impacts women & children in some of the poorest parts of the world, is exactly what our foreign aid dollars support. Thank you again for ensuring that they will have a future!
