Ravinia improve your ticket sales process. As others have said, I was on line for 8 hours not knowing if what I was waiting for was sold out in the first hour. I am a neighbor of Ravinia, never complain about traffic or noise because its such a great venue. I'm not feeling so generous this year.   more ›

Muslim Author Shares Perspective, Visits Book Stall

M. Salahuddin Khan, who finds inspiration from Les Miserables, aims to give mainstream Muslims a voice. He will be signing copies of his book at the Book Stall this evening.

More than 10 years have come and gone since the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001, and although most Americans now know better than to blame mainstream Muslims for the actions of a few militant extremists, many Muslims living in America still feel that their beliefs are often misunderstood by their friends and neighbors. Among them is M. Salahuddin Khan, who has experienced religious persecution firsthand and was recently inspired to write a novel about a Muslim man living in a post 9/11 world.  Khan is releasing the fourth edition of his book Sikander at The Book Stall in Winnetka on Tuesday. From 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. the author will read excerpts, take questions and sign copies of his book. "I consider myself to be a mainstream Muslim, and…

Local Gardeners 'Go Native'

The authors of “The Midwestern Native Garden” are hosting presentations and signings in Wilmette, Winnetka and Glencoe.

It was the lack of butterflies that made Charlotte Adelman realize there was something wrong with her garden. It was populated by beautiful exotic flowers like Chinese day lilies, but her flora failed to attract any fauna. “There they sit doing nothing but being visual,” said Adelman, who lives in Wilmette. “I noticed where there’s native plants they’ll always have bees buzzing around and they’ll be attracting butterflies, so I started working on the idea of having native plants in my own garden.” Along with her husband Bernard Schwartz, Adelman is hosting a series of local discussions and book signings. You can see them at 7 p.m. April 19 at Round Table Books in Winnetka, 10 a.m. April 21 at the Wilmette Public Library and 1:30 p.m. May …

Charlotte Adelman and Bernard Schwartz's latest book is fabulous! I ripped out all of our old bushes infront of our house and a few "weed trees" in our back yard last spring. I replaced the "weed trees" with native Red Buds and planted a native garden infront of our home; everything is growing this spring and it all looks beautiful!!! I gave the Midwestern Native Garden book to several people …   more ›

New Trier Alumnus Hosts Improv Show at Second City

The New Trier grad's weekly live podcast features interviews with some of Chicago’s funniest performers.

New Trier grad Jimmy Carrane has been hosting Improv Nerd at The Second City since November, but he said his guests surprise him every week. When the Kenilworth native talks to former colleagues from The Annoyance Theatre in Chicago, he’s shocked to learn that for some performers there, the partying started while the show was still going on. When Carrane asks veteran improviser Mark Sutton how he stays relevant, Sutton confesses he doesn’t believe that he has, and that after 25 years in the industry, performing has taken a back seat in his life. Carrane, who now lives in Evanston, said he loves these revelations. “I want people to reveal themselves and tell stories, because stories are what people remember,” Carrane said. “Those things, to…

Local Jewish Vets Honored at Holocaust Museum

The story of American Jews serving in World War II has come to life via artifacts and recorded memories in a stunning traveling exhibit.

The touring exhibit of “Ours to Fight For: American Jews in the Second World War” - on display at Skokie’s Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center through June 21 – is so compelling museum officials wouldn’t dare alter its layout. But they were allowed some flexibility. That’s why the opening of the exhibit has a huge photo – the idea of museum officials to show the sinking battleship Arizona at Pearl Harbor around a film of Franklin Roosevelt’s war-declaration speech the next day. And that’s why as spellbound exhibit-goers prepare to leave the exhibit, after examining artifacts ranging from machine guns to a Torah used in the first service at Dachau after its liberation, they come upon a “Wall of Honor” with rotating vintage photos…

YouTube Story Not New to Patch Readers

Patch reported last year how one young soldier escaped from Joseph Kony.

Patch readers were aware just under a year ago of the plight of children conscripted into the Lord’s Liberation Army of Joseph Kony when they read about the experience of David Ocitti, a Ugandan who was one of the few to escape. Now the story has gone viral with more than 58 million YouTube viewings of a 28-minute documentary, Kony 2012, designed to bring the man to justice. View the video and read the story Ocitti told a youth group gathering last April at Congregation Am Shalom in Glencoe of how he saw his father murdered, his mother abducted and his brothers killed by Kony’s troops.
