Winnetka Landmark Ordinance Could be in Jeopardy
With the seating of three new trustees in the spring, cases where residents attempt to get landmark status for their homes are becoming more difficult to gain approval for, the 'TribLocal' reports.
The Winnetka Village Council is making it inceasingly harder for residents to get a landmark designation for their homes, according to TribLocal.
The reasons why, TribLocal reports, include the ability for homeowners who do receive the designation to apply for a property tax assessment freeze for eight years. Trustees argue the designation comes at a price for other residents whose taxes must make up for the reduction.

It should be tough to get this designation. Any time officials approve the freeze on someone's property tax bill means they are approving the increase in everyone else's tax bill to pick up the slack.

Being designated by a qualified municipality or agency as an historic landmark is only one step in the process of approval for the property tax freeze and is no guarantee that it will be awarded.
