Winnetka has two referenda questions on its March 20 ballot — one on the village's current Affordable Housing Plan and one about the inclusion of affordable housing for the development of the Post Office Site.
Those two questions seem to have touched a nerve with residents, so we wanted to start a dialogue on the site for those who feel passionately about the issues and those who are still undecided.
Today we're exploring the first question. Please vote in our poll below and then share your thoughts in the comment section.

"Should the Village of Winnetka expand our existing Affordable Housing Plan?"

These questions are non-binding and were added to the ballot to generate ammunition for WHOA. The second question is particularly irrelevant since the post office site has not been any part of the affordable housing discussion and is not at issue. The results will mean nothing, but I'm sure they will be used to make false points about the beliefs of the community.

I hope that referendum will pass, so that more people will be able to afford to live in Winnetka. If that happens, more people will shop at Winnetka businesses, creating jobs.

Even if this issue is one that could be consolidated into a "yes" or "no" question, the only people with a reason to vote in this election are Republicans, so the results of this referendum will not represent the opinion of the entire Winnetka community. Nevertheless, nsmom is right - they will almost certainly be held up by "WHOA" as if they did.

We need affordable housing in Winnetka, and it should not even be a question on a ballot. It's a sad commentary that people in Winnetka are getting misinformed by the WHOA group, and don't recognize the value of affordable housing -- even as choices for our own residents.

I have lived in Winnetka for over 20 years and I agree, we need affordable mansions. I always wanted to live on the lake and have my own private beach but these homes are so expensive. We should take these homes by force and give them to more deserving folks, like myself. It's nice to see some patriots like myself commenting here to protect the rights of the non- taxpayers!
