Viewfinder: Winnetka Youth Organization Open House
On Wednesday night, the Winnetka Youth Organization (WYO) opened its space to community members to discuss what it's all about.
The Winnetka Youth Organization, affectionately known as the YO, has been around for over 40 years, though from the looks of its funky, fresh space in the basement of the Winnetka Community House, you'd never guess it. The YO provides a safe, relaxed space for area teens to hang out, do homework, play pool and "find support as they develop their individual identities." They plan concerts, beach BBQs, dances, art exhibitions and more -- all supervised by their friendly, welcoming staff -- where youths and teens can have fun and feel free to just be themselves.
On Wednesday night, the YO opened up about its role in the community, inviting residents to meet the staff and tour the space -- comfy leather couches, foosball and pool tables and walls splayed with murals, favorite band names and quotes.
"It's goofy and relaxed and kids are really drawn to it. And what I really like about it is that we're here for everybody: the artists, the kids who play music or sports, everybody," said Mindi Maneck, a youth worker for the YO.
On Friday, the Winnetka Youth Organization, in collaboration with Haven Youth and Family Services and Erika’s Lighthouse, we will be hosting a concert and fundraising event at the YO. All proceeds will benefit the educational programming and services at Erika's Lighthouse.
Guests at the Open House showed their love for Patch by posing with our Patch About Town sign.
