Fire Chief Alan Berkowsky knows a thing or two about what it means to be a firefighter.

After serving in Evanston for nearly three decades, he became Winentka's fire chief in April. You can read that story on Patch here.

Throughout this week, the station's firefighters use totaled cars to practice rescue protocol after car crashes. Check out the photo gallery here.

Ever wonder what it means to be a firefighter, wearing 20 pounds of protective gear on a hot July day, and practicing rescue drills?

Check out this week's Patch Portrait.

About this column: We use the lens of the "everyday" to capture the characters of our communities. We hope to give voice to the unofficial sources that we never hear from and to humanize the official sources more often used by the media. Look forward to a new Patch Portrait in your Patch region each Wednesday. In the meantime, send us your suggestions for profiles of the people you love. Speaking about community fire fighters, an article about fire sprinkler systems might be of interest. Numerous communities around Chicago have adopted residential sprinkler ordinances-ordinances which require newly constructed single-family homes to be protected by a sprinkler system.

I know the concept of providing sprinkler protection in your home may sound strange, but there are thousands of sprinklered homes around Chicago. Since most fires in a community are home fires, requiring sprinkler protection in homes can reduce community fire department costs. (You don't need as many fire fighters in communities where homes are protected by sprinklers.)

And just in case your wondering, no I do not make money off of selling sprinkler systems for single-family homes.
