Senior Fitness Start Up! Begins Wednesday

Organizers say exercise class fills a true need for programs designed specifically for seniors on the North Shore.

North Shore senior citizens are invited to take part in the Senior Fitness Start Up! at Glencoe Park District's Takiff Center starting Wednesday, July 11.

The fitness class, sponsored by Family Service of Glencoe and the Glencoe Park District, will be taught by nationally certified fitness coach Mark Cibrario.

"When I was speaking to a group recently about aging well, the seniors I was with expressed a need for a class just like this, and Mark was strongly recommended due to his background working with senior fitness," said Joan Merlo, LCSW at Family Service of Glencoe.

The first session will be held Wednesday, July 11, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. and the cost is $20 per session.

Seniors are not required to live in Glencoe to take advantage of the class, and can attend on a pay-as-you-go basis.

If after the first six session there is solid participation, Merlo said the Glencoe Park District will pick up the class and offer it on a more long-term basis.

"As a grandmother myself, I believe this fills a real need, seniors are living longer and helping to care for their grandkids, and we need to keep our bodies and muscles in shape," Merlo said.
