The Glencoe Park District hosted its annual Family Sand Sculpting Contest Sunday afternoon at Glencoe Beach.

Participants competed for a win in four catergories: best animal, best castle, best sculpture, and most creative sculpture. Participation in the competition was free with admission to the beach.

About 100 beachgoers gathered to watch or take part in the contest, which resulted in just under a dozen sculptures.

Creations this year included a turtle, two sea monsters, a tribute to the Olympics, an alien, a couple of castles, and even a mermaid. Winners received a Glencoe Park District beach towel and a ticket for free admission to the beach.

David Johnson, facility manager for the park district, says the contest allows them to highlight other services they offer at the beach, such as their rental facilities and picnic areas which are available throughout the Summer.

"It's just a fun event for families to come down to the beach and take part in," Johnson said.
