The majority of Northfield voters approved authorizing the Village of Northfield to seek cheaper electricity for the community.

Some 75 percent of voters, or 2,030 voters, voted 'yes'. About 25 percent of voters, or 679 voters voted 'no'.

With most of the precincts reporting, 74 percent voted to authorize Northfield to seek cheaper electricity for residential and commercial retail customers.

About Northfield’s Electricity Aggregation Referendum

The Village of Northfield is seeking authority to seek cheaper electricity for residential and commercial retail customers who have not opted out of the program. 

The village expects that savings could reach as high as 50 percent compared with current Commonwealth Edison rates. 

The village can solicit bids only for the power generation portion of the electric bill; ComEd still would distribute power and handle monthly bills for Libertyville residents. Residents still would call ComEd if services were interrupted.

• If a referendum passes, the village still could choose to purchase power from ComEd. Residents or small businesses also could choose to keep their original power supplier even if the village is working with another supplier.
• If the referendum does not pass, the village would not have the authority to solicit bids and find out who has the cheapest electricity price and would have to work with ComEd.
