Expect a Lower Sales Tax in 2012

The sales tax rate is dropping by .25 percent in Winnetka and Northfield.

Rejoice! The sales tax rate in Winnetka and Northfield has slid to 8.25 percent. One year ago, the same tax was at 8.5 percent, which means a slight decrease.

This is the second year the area has enjoyed a decrease since the tax rate jumped in 2009 to 9 percent. Ten years ago, the tax rate was 7.75 percent.

According to the Illinois Department of Revenue, "Depending upon the location of the sale, the actual sales tax rate may be higher than the fundamental rate."

This is due to a variety of factors, such as home rule, non-home rule, water commission, mass transit, park district, county public safety, public facilities or transportation, and county school facility tax.
